New Potain MCR 305 Tower Crane Sets Up Quickly, Conserves Space On High-Rise Projects

French and Chinese engineers collaborated on Manitowoc’s new Potain MCR 305 luffing jib tower crane, designed with engineering advancements to save space and setup time on vertical building projects. A reduced out-of-service radius frees up room for other cranes on the jobsite, while its fewer required anchorage points to the building allow contractors to quickly erect the MCR 305.

The new top-slewing crane will be sold across Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.

Meeting Customer Needs With The MCR 305

The new Potain MCR 305 crane comes in two versions, namely the H20 with a 20-tonne (22-U.S.-ton) capacity and the H25 with a 25-t (27.6-U.S.-t) capacity. With a 60-metre (196.9-foot) jib length, maximum tip loads are 3.1 t (3.4 U.S. t) for the H20 and 3 t (3.3 U.S. t) for the H25.

Manitowoc listened to user feedback through its Voice of the Customer process, which served as a guide for the new high-rise construction crane. The design aims to increase construction productivity for crane operations.

“We’ve had extensive conversations with customers and the insights we gained have helped us develop an impressive new luffing jib crane,” says Leong Kwong-Joon, regional product manager for Potain tower cranes at Manitowoc. “Strength gains are realized along the entire length of the jib. There are also great savings for customers in climbing higher faster, and better productivity with a substantially reduced out-of-service radius.”

Short Out-Of-Service Radius, Half The Anchor Points

The out-of-service radius of the MCR 305 is a mere 12.5 m (41 ft), as compared with 22 m (72 ft) for Potain’s MCR 295 A with the same setup. The shorter radius poses a lower risk of on-site interference with other lift equipment. It even allows space for a second crane to dramatically speed up work on many high-rise projects.

The MCR 305 can attain a height of 190 m (623 ft) with reduced anchorage points compared to similar Manitowoc cranes. The MCR 305 only requires six anchor points as compared with the MCR 295’s 11 points.

Winch options for the MCR 305 include high-performance lifting (HPL) equipment with up to 1,200 m (3,937 ft) of wire rope available. Manitowoc builds the new luffing jib crane at its factory in Zhangjiagang, China.
